I quote Calivox. I play plain gut (Aquila) and I love it. I've played in the past Olive G and I think that it's matching better than plain gut with Spiro EAD.
If you want to play gut G, it's better to play also D gut at least and EA Spiro or Velvet Garbo (my choice) or other.
just my opinion. |
I agree. I personally don't like matching steel with gut but if you are going to you need to transition from G to A in a more pleasing and balanced manner. If you want to use a gut G, go with either a gut D or a Garbo light D before going to the Spiro A and E (you may also want to try something like a Garbo or Anima for the E and A. Both will match the gut better than Spiros). The Garbo D sounds remarkably like gut but is a bit more focused with less bloom. Tension is low like gut. I've used Garbos for the E and A and Animas (both by Velvet) and they are both good matches with gut. Animas are little more modern sounding with more focus and growl. Garbos sound very much like wrapped gut but stay in tune when the weather changes.
If you really want Spiros on the E, A and D though, I'd go with the Olive G.
