Gamut Strings

Hallo and happy New Year !

I just discovered some cracks in the winding on my SilverWoundedGamut A -string around Bb and also on the Silverwounded E string around the g. Is this common? I bought them in april 2010.
Is there anything i can do about it ?
THANKS

Send them back to him for rewinding. He charges $50 a string and they come back like new. I've done it. He's fast too.

Dan is a good guy to deal with and Im sure he will do what he can. It took about 6 weeks to get my Lyon G and Pistoy D (heavy+) cause all the gut were coming out to thin for the Pistoy, I drove him nuts but he didnt mind. John

Dan told me once there is a lining between the wound wire and the gut core, and the lining gets damaged by the dryness in winter, the constant expanding and shrinking of the winding can do that. Ultimately it can affect the sound.

But you say the winding itself is coming undone, which suggests something else entirely. Although it hasn't happened to my Gamuts, I've heard of the winding coming undone at the bridge or nut because of the stress. At the places you mention (at about Bb or G), I wonder what might be the cause of that to happen on strings that were new in April.

It would be great to hear back from you how you resolve this one.
