Gut Strings from India

My dear fellow bassist compadres, a few years back I discovered these Indian gut strings on ebay and I was attracted to the price immediately! After they arrived and I had strung my bass, I was loving the D & G strings next to the Spiro E & A. Over the next year or two I was a bit puzzled with why these the strings just wouldn't settle but I excepted them the way they were! At the end the G string was significantly thinner and had hair on it as it was slowly deteriorating. I replaced them with Garbos in the end. Recently purchased some gut strings also on ebay, they're called Kampffe's "Royal" with E & A Silver wound gut and D & G pure gut. These strings are twisted much more, and so beautifully. They are so incredibly smooth and also lacquered I think?!? Darker yellow in color and wait for this!!! they have settled in such a short time (of course a tiny twist is still needed and probably always will be) but in comparison with the bleached Indian ebay strings these strings are beautiful and they also BOW nicely! I imagine that Gamut strings are beautifully made like these, so when these ones die I will replace them with Gamut as I dont think that they make these Kampffe strings anymore! I am sure I'll get hammered by those in favor of Indian strings, I dont dispute it, as maybe they are great to slap, pull and torture. I play jazz and I will never waste a penny on those strings however cheap they are. There is 'made' and there is 'well made'! Timo

Thanks for the info Timo.

I'll look at the "Kampffe" strings you mentioned.

UPDATE: The "Kampffe" (sp?) must have been a 1-time deal on eBay - I don't see anything by that name now.

I'm ok for now, but once I need to get new strings, I'll probably look at the Lenzners. I'd go with Clef guts, but I play a 3-stringer and have no need for the E, and it seems that the Clefs only come in sets of 4.

George
