I made the gut plunge a few months ago. I'm happy I did. I play mostly arco and was worried about being held back in my arco studies. Someone in this forum recommended that I get varnished gut strings -that turned out to be a good recommendation. I think the smoother finish minimizes the chance of the hair getting caught in the otherwise irregular surface of unvarnished gut strings. Still, it takes a while to get used to bowing them. All imperfections in technique are underscored. My teacher thinks it's actually helped me rather than hold me back.

A significant number of threads here are dedicated to finding the best hybrid string -the Holy Grail. For me gut has come the closest to that goal, but it came at the price of enduring a lot of squeaks, shrieks and wisps for 2+ months.
