guts vs. weedwhackers vs. steel

The guy I might be buying a bass from offered me a choice of these three. I am a total DB noob. WHat are the differences in feel, loudness, tone, sustain etc???

@whitespike: what kind of music will you play?
Pizz only?
Pizz and arco?
Arco only?
Acoustic?
Amplified?
Rockabilly?
Bluegrass?
Jazz?
Classic?
Blues?

I would get the guts.... weedwhackers are cheap and you can find lots of good used steel strings if you want to (and should) try them in the future...

Go for the steels- ask for Thomastic Spirocore Weich or Mittel (light or medium).

I'm as big a gut fan as the next guy, but given that Whitespike has given us no information about himself (herself?), let alone the bass or the strings, going for steel strings seems like the safest option.

Bad gut strings suck.

Weed-whackers are better left for the weeds in my experience- the A and E are especially bad.

I don't see how any recommendations can be properly levied without knowing more about the player, the context and the bass.

If the OP wishes to be more specific and give more detail then this group could be helpful, otherwise it's just an internet popularity contest.

To that end there is an entire DB strings category filled with 10+ years of opinions about strings. Feel free to browse and get ideas that would help ask more detailed questions.
