helicore orch for pizz playing

Hi,

Anyone using helicore orch for pizz playing?

I'm testing the hybrids at the moment and finding them a little twangy, I happened to try an old medium orch E (..the only orch string I have) and it sounds great, plenty of sustain and body.

Before I run out and spend more money, does anyone use a full set of these strings for regular pizz?

Thanks,

I have them on my Corsini model Basses and they Pizz great. Depending on the Bass they bow good too but even these are bright. I would actually call these Hybrid Strings as they sound good 80-90% on both styles.

Thanks Ken,

That's very interesting as they sound much more lively than other, more established Orch strings.

The bass I'm using them with is actually one built in 1983 by London’s Roger Dawson (...a gentleman I think you’re familiar with.) and used, for many years by the principle of the L.S.O.

I think I might give them a whirl for a while...

Cheers,

I have used them for pizz and liked them quite a lot. I didn't use them long. I had bought a well used set and they needed to come back out. I did buy a new set, but never installed them. I was trying a lot of things and have sworn off experimentation for a while. But, I did like them and probably will try them again.

If you wanted a deal on a new set, however, PM me and we can talk about the set I have. Never been out of the box.

I've played primarily with various hybrid strings, I went through an orchestral string phase and now I'm trying pizz strings.

I don't know how the current formula compares to that of a few years ago, but I mistakenly put them on my bass before a record date, thinking they were the same type of D"Addarios I had used previously, which were closer to spirocores. Anyway, they felt much stiffer and had less sustain than I like, but had a good round tone and solid fundamental. They weren't for me but could work as a hybrid string, it all depends upon your taste.

For me, they bowed great, of course and had a nice woody pizz tone. I thought that they had enough sustain, until I got to a loud group mix to cut through or a difficult sound stage, but I was using a really old set and I didn't know how "dead" they were compared to a new set.

A string that I intended to come back to, though.

I borrowed a bass that had the orch strings (I don't know which tension) at a gig. They felt like rubber bands in comparison to my Helicore pizz, regular tension. I loved bowing them, but I felt that they didn't project well played pizz-style in a jazz trio. It was also a very acoustically unfriendly room.

I recently switched to the light tension pizz set. I still like their sound played pizz, and they bow easier. And since I'm playing more electric these days, the lighter set is easier on my left hand.

Every time I have tried any of the heliocores that have sounded like dead Spiros to me.
