The core is steel rope-core, like all other Helicores.

I didn't care for Helicore Orchestra strings for pizz at all (though I wasn't using the Solo's). They lacked a well defined sound, it was kind of a vague sound that didn't sound good when playing alone and didn't cut through well enough when playing in a band.

i just put helicore orchestras on my bass and i have to agree that the pizz sound leaves a lot to be desired. does anyone know if the hybrids (supposably a middle ground between the pizz and orchestral versions of helicores) do both pizz and arco justice?>

I don't know about pizz on hybrids, (I don't have the ear for it) but hybrids are really tinny with a bow.

The hybrids are pretty lacking for pizz too.

I don't think you'll find what you're looking for with any kind of helicore. For what they are (cheap student grade strings), I think the helicores are okay, but I think you'll be better served by getting some real strings.

Well, whether you like them or not, Helicore are not cheap, student-grade strings. Many orchestra and jazz professionals use them and like them. Although not my favorite, I found the Helicore Orchestra Medium to be a decent string. They bow very well and the pizz is OK. They're maybe a little brighter than Flexicor for pizz. I've never tried the solo gauge.

The Hybrids were neither here nor there for me. I didn't like the arco at all, and the pizz wasn't so great either. But if you do a lot of arco and like a dark, not real sustaining pizz, the Helicore Orchestras are pretty good. IMO

I found the Hybrids okay on pizz. A little pingy but not bad. Real bad news on arco. Had a tough time getting decent grab and tone. I tried the Orchestras for a little bit. Were more to my liking tone wise on pizz but slightly muddy. Settled on Obligatos. Nice dark tone on pizz but not complete mud. Well worth the little jump in price. Oh a dream on arco if your interested.
