| Helicore Question No, this isn't daft. When D'Addario refers to "nickel" in the context of their XL line of electric guitar and electric bass strings, it means nickel plated steel wrap wire. But it could also mean pure nickel wrap, like on their half-round electric strings, or nickel alloy of some sort. I have emailed D'Addario customer service, but no reply.
My hand perspiration tends to eat pure nickel wrap (And turns my fingertips black to boot!), but does alright with both chrome flats and stainless flats. So it is important to me to know up front what definition of "nickel" is used in context. It could also explain, apart from the QC issues reported, as to why the reviews and experiences with these strings is so broad and polarized, unlike, say, a Spiro E, which has a chrome steel wrap, and seems to have a narrower range of reported experiences, all generally good. Maybe not the preferred flavor, but at least acknowledgment of the quality and the type of tone produced.
So, does anybody out there know what D'Addario means in this context of what they call "nickel" on their Helicores?
