Just one more question.. I really want to try the Animas, but I am not sure about buying a full set right now, because of the price. How about ordering an Anima G and try that one with the Spiro Mittels? Would that be a combination that would work?

ehhh... I dunno. The difference in the feel and tension might throw you a little. The character of the sound is pretty different as well. If you're doing any arco, you may have a hard time bowing the Anima. Thumb position arco was very iffy for me on the Animas.

Marcus is correct about the difficulty in bowing Animas. I had an easier time bowing guts than Animas back in my good old gut days. And the only way to get an individual Velvet string is to buy it used, right?

Velvet strings are weird. Takes a bit of doing to match them up with something that's not a Velvet string, especially Animas.

I can't see them matching up with spiros unless they are weich or solo and even then idunno.

Nope. The best option is Lou Roten. He sell sets and individual strings, and at the best prices i've seen anywhere. David Gage also sells them individually, but with a significant markup.

I've been using a Garbo A & E with a Gamut G & D, and it's been working very well, both in sound and feel (I've seen other posters mention this setup as well). And the last time I saw Ben Allison (three or four months ago), he had an Anima G & D on top of a Spiro A & E, (I don't remember what gauge the Spiro's were, definitely not solo though, probably mittel) and his bass felt and sounded great.
