Help me identify these strings!

Yesterday the local Conservatoir kindly asked me to set up one of their older basses. It is a German Hybrid flatback, neglected for more than ten years in the Con's warehouse. It is strung with strings which have a black winding, ending in a small red winding. Despite their age they bow exceptionally well. Have you got any idea what are these strings?
