Help with new strings: My bass needs higher tension to live up to it's potential

Hi all,

So, I've got this Wilfer that was custom made for me in '99. It's a great bass, nice and clean, great feel, deeper ribs for a super-bass sound. Here's the thing, though: I need a higher tension string to make this girl speak.

Rather than list off all the strings I've tried, let me do it like this: I love the feel of Corelli strings, and have used 370M and 370F. After a while, they got a bit too tinny-sounding for me. I now have Pirastro Flat Chromesteel, and I do really like their feel, but they are just a bit too dark after about 10 months of playing.

Due to some confusion, let me revise this description: after checking my bank statement, these strings were used for 9 months, and rather than "dark," I should have said "quiet." The point is that my bass just needs to be strung more tightly in order the get the dang thing to speak

So, is there something out there that has a similar feel to these types (that smooth, easy-on-the-fingers feel), has a slightly higher tension? I haven't tried Corelli 370TX's yet, and may go that route, but am up for suggestions

Whatever they are, they'll have to do the good old double-duty: strong sound and responsive with a bow, but should have a pretty good sustain with pizz.

Thanks for your help all!

I guess that means I need to "go it alone."

That's okay though: it gives me an excuse to try out some other strings to see what will work out the best. For now, I'm going to go with a suggestion that Francois (I believe) made in a post a while back: Corelli TX G, D , Weich A, Mittel E, and see where that gets me...

Paul, I have a page with bass string gauges and tensions gathered from various sources. Send me an email address if you want it.

I'm now using solo Spiros on the bottom with the Corellis TX on top.
I get a better balance and blend that way.

Hi Francois,

I've never used solos of any brand before: could you elaborate on the tuning you're using for your lower two strings? Thanks!

Hi Paul.
I use orchestra pitch on all strings, but use the solo Spiros on the bottom string to get lower tension.
They also have a warmer tone than regulars, but still have good definition and clarity.
They give less volume, but this way make a better match to the Corellis, which are rather quiet strings in comparision with regular Spiros.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
François

That straightens it out for me: thanks Francois!
