Help with String ID

Finally thinking about a string upgrade for my used Englehardt. But I want to make an educated choice based on what I've got already. But has anybody seen these before? To me it looks like black on both ends, with a red ring at the tail. And it doesn't really show up in the picture, but there is a blue ring on the peg end of the E and purple on the D. I tried the wrapping tool on the Quinn website, but the closest match I could find was black on both ends with no rings (Thomastik Precision). Anybody out there have a definitive answer? Thanks!

I'll admit I was stumped, but Francois is un-stumpable!

Thanks! Been meaning to ask for a long time. Now that we have facts, I'm interested in some opinions...

I like my sound. But I have always felt that my bass felt "spongy," especially compared to picking up someone else's bass. So much so that I think at times it has been a hindrance. Reading around it seems like Spirocores are kind of the baseline (no pun intended). How do they compare sonically with the Corelli's? I guess what I'm after is a similar sound but a little bit tighter/more responsive feel.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!!

Selecting a string for the particular playing like guitar is very important. The characteristic of it is directly influence how the instrument will ultimately sound.

1 in 5,000 north Atlantic lobsters are born bright blue.

Spirocores are good strings. I don't have experience with Corellis, they may be easier with the bow and have a reputation for being generally softer under the fingers than most. Spiros would definitely be more immediate and aggressive, but can sound full and warm under the right hands and in the right room. if you're not sure and money is an issue, watch the classifieds for a used set. They age well, so no harm in buying used, at least until you know that they are for you.

Francois, it seems like you're one of the few people that use Corelli's. I'm curious to get your opinion of them vs. Spiro (Weich and/or Mittel). Like I said, I like my current tone (warm, full) but just wonder about the feel of my instrument - I'm a little scared that if I start messing with stuff I'll never be happy again! And for reference, my bowing is not fit to leave the basement so almost all pizz for me, pretty much all real-book type jazz, Englehardt, Full Circle, Acoustic Image.

FWIW, I'm changing strings as I'm changing clothes...
Well, that's almost that worse...
No Corellis on my instrument at the moment.

Corellis do have some similarities with Spiros sonically.
I suggest Spiro Weichs if you want something similar but more responsive and quick, and not too much tension for the moment.

There is that risk! It's like trying heroin just once...

Spirocores are pretty safe move, especially for what you are doing. I agree with our string guru that Weichs would be closer to where you are and less of a transition.

Spirocores are also very liquid investment, easy to sell through our forums if for some reason they weren't for you. But, give them a month or two to settle in.

Already broken in, and cheaper...
