Help with Velvets!!!

I just started to install a new set of Velvet Blues on my Pollmann. Is it normal to have some of the copper winding to go around the tuning peg? I thought I read somewhere that only the soft fabric part of Velvet strings should go around the peg. With my string length and tailpiece, The G string will not get tight unless some of the copper winds around the shaft. I'm going to stop installing until I get a definitive answer to this. I don't want to ruin an expensive string.

Nuno, are you out there?

Thanks in advance for any help.

George

My one experience with Velvets, the Compas 180s, was that it was difficult to center the string so that the windings didn't get wrapped around a tuning peg. The 180s have to be tied by hand at both ends. I had to move my E string back to the more traditional lower peg to do this, and the other strings were difficult to center, too. Some trial and error involved, especially since they stretch a lot while doing this.

If you lay the strings out on the bass, will the windings fit between the nut and bridge? You may have to start winding lower at the nut and tighten them lower at the tailpiece so that they don't wrap around the tuner.

Its not a problem for the copper winding of the Velvet Blue (and Anima and Garbo) to go into the tuning machines, the real problem is with the compas 180 because they have a much thinner core and the inox winding is more fragile too.

I had the same issue when I put my Blues on two days ago, but I just went ahead with it. No problems so far.
