How old is old?

I just got my first double bass. The set up seems good and the fretboard knowledge is transferring over excellently from electric bass.

The previous owner told me he never changed the strings and he had it for 10 years! It sounds fine though and he suggested I play it for a while before jumping in and changing strings.

So how old is old for strings? Anyone out there playing on really old strings? Am I potentially missing out on tone by not changing these strings?

I am playing country/bluegrass/blues mostly. It is an 80s Engelhardt.

You can always take the old strings off and not throw them away, and put them back on at some point in the future if you want to.
