Unhappy i need string advice

Can someone please help me pick new strings for my 41 Kay? I've been using Spiro mediums for as long as I've been playing, but I desperately want to make a change. I've been reading about all the different strings for weeks now, and I still can't make up my mind. I mostly play bluegrass, but I want something that would sound good for jazz, too. I also mostly play pizz, but I'd like a string that responds well to the bow, since I try to practice arco as much as possible. I've been considering Thomastik Dominants, Velvet animas, and Innovation Super Silvers. I'd love to find something that sounds a bit more organic than the spiros, and is also a bit easier on the fingers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To my ears, velvet animas are more "organic" than spiros; they are definitely easier on the fingers. They are very pricey but the set I have keeps sounding better and better to me. Lots of people seem to dislike them though

Of the three you mentioned I prefer Animas and Dominants. Dominants will feel very familiar when coming from spiros. Animas have a complex organic tone. The have very low tension and are gutlike but still metal sounding. They are a unique string and an acquired taste. Dominants are dark and big. Dominants are easier to bow. I've had both on my basses. I prefer the Dominants on my Joe German 40's plywood. I like both on My Cleveland bass but it is wearing Animas now.

Surf the string threads, I started a long one detailing both those strings. Lots of info already on this site about both.

In the end, you'll have to try both for yourself. Nobody escapes this without a drawer full of stuff you aren't using.

Thanks for the advice PBJ and UT. I guess I need to just dive in and start trying some different strings. I"ll probably start with the Dominants.

Check out the recent thread on Superflexibles and do a search for other discussions about them. They are a very capable hybrid string and a nice option if you are used to Spiros.
