Hdiddy, I think you said that you had Kolstein Heritages (?) on your bass for a while, so did I. The Dominants are a much fuller, more complete sound. Kinda like what the K.H.s hinted at... oh yeah, and more volume! So far I like.

Sweeeet. I can do with a little less mwah but I'm def wanting that modern sound. I like the volume with the spiros, same with the Animas. The Heritages were ok but in hindsight now I just wanted more tension. The Heritage E was particularly flabby and the nasality of the G just drove me up the wall.

Anyways, I just ordered some Doms today after listening to FITZGEARHEAD's mp3 clips. I'm going do like Andy and keep the Spiro E on the bass. It's cheaper that way. The set of 3 strings only ran $100.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll put my impressions of the strings on my bass once I get a hold of them.

So far, these strings are the sound I hear in my head. It's modern but not particularly metallic. More organic and meaty, but not really "gut". They are full sounding, very even. I can really dig in and the strings don't choke. They definitely move some air, and I am really diggin' the E string. The Spiro E on my bass was a little, how should I say it, pale, compared to the rest of the set. The Dominant E output is a better match. I much prefer the Dom E. It will ggrrrowl if you want it to, but that's not where it goes first. The tension is very similar to the Spiros. My current string height is 6-7ish to 9-10ish (mm), and I like the bounce you get from the higher string height. I personally think that the old(er) school sound comes from string height and the way it forces you to play, as much as anything else. I'll report back after some amped gigs this next weekend. Very positive first impressions though.

Wow, I totally forgot about this thread that I had started. The Doms have been working out great and I dig the sound. They've been on for over a month now. At first the tension didn't seem as much as Spiro but somehow they felt like they dug deep into my fingers like I was plucking butter knives. I lowered the string heights quite a bit and not missing the high string bounce at all really. One thing I noticed is the acoustic sound is one thing, but they seem to amplify much better than any of the other strings I've used. Does anybody else notice that or is it just me?

Anyways, I'm settled on these for now but yeah the Spiro E is kinda limp compared to the rest of the strings. I was poking round TB looking for E string suggestions and found this here thread. JEFFKISSANDTELL's post just fit the description of what I've been noticing. Gonna get me an Dom E and see how it goes.

Thanks again everybody.

hdoodlin'lounge, we should have our own north/central Cali belch fest so's we can check out all the local rigs. Maybe I'll PM the bay area peoples the next time I play in the city. If you ever come down to Santa Cruz/Monterey let me know. ANYWAY, I've switched back to the mittels...I put a set of 4/4s on the Cleveland. The Dominants seemed to "grab" my fingers too much. I've been doing a ton of all night bar gigs and it seemed like the Doms were wreckin' my right hand. Nothing changed but the strings. I really liked the sound, but on my bass, the Spiros sound a bit less nasally. In all honesty I don't think many could tell the difference. I guess the honeymoon didn't last too long.
