Larry Grenadier-What Strings does he use?

I was under the impression that Larry uses Velvet Garbos, so I tried them and hated them. I then found out that he uses a Velvet G and all the others are different-any idea what they are? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Matt

I bet that would be pretty easy to find on TBDB if you just run a search. I've seen his setup discussed here before.

I read somewhere that he uses Helicore Hybrids and a Velvet Anima G. The Anima G is quite different from the Garbo. It's metal wound, the same as the rest of the Anima set, and while thicker than a steel in diameter, it's nowhere as gargantuan as the Garbo G.

I'm pretty sure he uses Garbo G, Oliv D, and Helicore Hybrid A & E. Quite a strange set...

He's used a lot of different strings over the years. When you hear his recordings from the 1990s, he's just using Spirocore weichs according to an interview he gave in Bass Player magazine (I remember him saying that he gets a good dark sound from them even if they're too bright on some people's basses). But according to a student of mine who took some lessons with him recently, he's been using Helicore Hybrids on the E, A, and D and either a Velvet Anima, Garbo, or Pirastro Oliv on the G.

Somehow he always sounds just like Larry Grenadier.

I've seen him with Brad Mehldau in Cologne a few weeks ago. His Strings looked like Helicore Orchestra EAD and Anima G.

When I used to share bills with him in the mid-90's he was using all gut. I tried his bass one time. Full size. Huge.

Bass Player Mag recently did an article with Larry, they covered his current equipment setup there.

I used to hear Larry in the early and Mid eighties around the Bay Area. Back then he sounded a lot like Eddie Gomez sounding like Scott LaFaro with an Underwood and Spiro's. He was always playing with top notch (and older) musicians. I think the bass was three times larger than he. Pretty impressive for a skinny little kid, and wow is he ever more impressive now!

according to the November 2007 Bass Player article:

Helicore Hybrid lights E, A, and D, Velvet Anima G.
