London, UK strings

Hi,
I'll be in London for a few days next week. I was wondering where I can go and buy DB strings in the downtown london area.

Any help ?

Thanks a lot
Cheers
Glenn

I never found anywhere - sorry! Despite looking!

I have bought all mine online from mainland Europe - far cheaper and much better selection available on the internet!

What about Foote's Music?
Their website shows basses and bass strings.

Not much in the centre I'm afraid. You'd be better off hopping on a train from Victoria to Sutton to see Malcolm Healey, or getting the 341 bus from Waterloo up to Bridgewood and Neitzert in Stoke Newington (about 35/40mins), who just repaired my bass beautifully.

I've been there a few times and it is very disappointing!

So the strings are in a small basement at the back - some times they only have 2 or 3 basses and are very expensive compared with online!

I reckon at least 25-30% more expensive than online!

No bass strings in London!? It's shocking! I'm on the edge of the Canadian prairie and the northern boreal forest in a tiny city of three-quarters of a million people and I can walk to at least two places that stock a basic selection of strings.

Sounds like there's an opportunity for someone to get into the bass (strings?) shop biz. No basses, no strings... how did Dave Holland ever get his start?

Well - everything to do with DB is in short supply compared to the US!

But the main thing for me is that I can look on European retail websites and see string sets priced the same in Euros as they are in £s (GBP) in shops in London!!

Exchange rate : 1.00 GBP = 1.47140 EUR or 1.00 EUR = 0.679492 GBP

That sounds very close to the general experience of Canadians looking at American prices -- a lot of stuff costs more here, not just bass stuff.

For comparative purposes, my local Long & McQuade (Canada's very good national pro music supplies vendor) sells a set of Spirocore Weichs for about 140 Canadian dollars (or is that Superflexibles? Can't remember. They were about $125 last I looked, I'm pretty sure.) That's about 90 Euros, 61 British pounds, or 121 U.S. dollars.

I think things used to be very different... I know a few people who bought basses for under £100 from shops in central london in the 60s, that are now worth tens of thousands. There used to be a lot more around.
One friend has a story about Mingus trying to gazump him for his £80 bass!

Yeah - Jazz had a heyday in Britain during the 60s - but the Beatles and pop really killed it off and it's very much a minority interest now. Also, by the early 70s, music shops in Britain really just became about electric guitars and keyboards - with little else catered for...

This is the cheapest I've found so far :

http://saitenkatalog.de/shop2/index....36f7f3a90fad58

Since last posting I had a think and it may be worth visting the Barbican, which has a music shop related to the Guildhall school of music which is nearby - I haven't been for a while, but they do specialise in Orchestral strings and have a lot of sheet music etc.

Argents music in Denmark Street is also good for sheet music ...?
