Mixing gut and spirocore

Hi,

I'm looking to buy some strings for a new 5 string double bass tuned with a high c. I'm not experienced with this type of thing as i'm new to double bass but i was thinking of mixing pirastro Eudoxa or Lenzner supersolos with thomastik spirocore's.

The other problem is with the high c, what would I use for that, gut or spriocore?

I was thinking of E and A as spiro's and D, G, C as gut. I don't know if there would be a massive volume or tone difference though.

I'm looknig to get a good jazz pizz tone but with a good arco tone too.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Go Spirocore first. It's the 'reference' string against which everything else is judged.

The lucky ones stay on Spiros...

+1.

My best advice to Newbies is to avoid the string combo thing until they have developed enough chops to be sure their problem issues are instrument related rather than technique related.

For Pizz it's always best to know what Spirocore play like before going with something else.

If you're going to mix strings, I'd definitely use a gut high C to mix with the gut G and D. I've not played the Lenzner high C but have examined them when they first came in, to contrast it to the G. Unlike any steel high C strings it is nicely substantial.

Do you have a specific reason for mixing Spiros with gut?
