'Mixing' strings?

Hello there,

I've recently taken up double bass again.

I upgraded my bass a few months ago. Fantastic.

It came with an old set of strings which my luthier reckons were used for orchestral work.

As it was a new (to me) bass, I didn't want to rush in changing everything.

But having had some time with them I decided it was time to change the strings - this was combined with the fact that I wanted to fit a Realist pick up.

I'm mainly playing pizz, and my luthier recommended Thomastik Superflexible.

These have been fitted and I'm delighted - a real improvement.

But, whilst A, D ang G strings sound wonderful (a lovely 'round' sound - all matching) the E string sounds a bit 'metallic' - more like playing an electric bass that's not plugged in (excuse that crass comparison).

When I took up the bass again and started visiting these forums I thought that the idea of mixing string types must just be for professionals.

But, I can see why you might want/need to do this.

So, I just don't know how to go about finding an E string that 'matches' the sound produced by the A, D and G.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Simon

Keep in mind that when stings are new, the bright metallic quality is most pronounced.

Generally, Superflexibles are considered to be less bright than the popular Spirocores. Your complaint is unusual in the sense that many people often find the E string in a set to be the one that's dull and they look to go brighter. If you find your Superflex E too bright, you might try either a Helicore Orchestra or Hybrid E, or a Pirastro Permanent or FlatChrome. If you go too far in the orchestral direction however, you may find the string too dull. Using a synthetic core string like Obligato or Evah Pirazzi might feel mismatched. Maybe others here would have more suggestions.

Another idea is the Belcanto E. some folks find it weak, but at least its dark and warm. Pizz has good sustain, somewhat similar to Superflexible, IMO.

BC is far to light a tension to mix well with the Superflex.

I'd use a Permanent, or give it more time. The superflex will get pretty dark in no time.

I also recommend you wait a couple of weeks first.

As for alternatives, the Corelli 370TX E came to mind.
For something with a very dark growl, the Pirastro Chromcor E is another suggestion.
But it may be too dark for the other ones.

Another vote for waiting. When I used Superflex E & A with Oliv D & G I about died when I first put them on they were so bright. They toned down quickly and blended in a week of heavy playing.
