So! This is a spin off from my previous thread about strings for my dark bass. My instrument had Belcanto's on and I was find them far too dark for the music I'm trying to play. (I do only bowed work, orchestral and lots of solo.) I like a lower tensioned string and found that Belcanto's were a bit too high tension for the sound I'm going for.

I put on a fair of Corelli 370Fx's...These strings suck.

Does anyone know the string tensions of of Pirastro Flat-Chromesteel? I could not find it online.

Thank you.

Flat Chromsteel are similar in tension to belcanto under my fingers, the E/A are very low and D/G moderate. Brighter and excellent sounding strings.

Calvin, c'mon, tell us what you really think of the Corellis.

I can usually find something to like about almost any string, but the 370s were one that I just wasn't hearing. This was on a student's bass, so it wasn't an ideal way to make an assessment, but they were just not very inspiring to me. I know they have their fans, but for me.... meh.

My teacher uses them and loves them. I think they sound thin and lame but he makes them work for him.

Can't help but think how badass he'd sound with a proper set of spirocores.

I had a set of FCs a while back. The D and G were very cello-like in tone (which I actually dug for a little), and I found the E and A to be quite lacking in power/low end. I've settled once again on my EPs.. which provide a bit more "oomph".

That's what I thought, too, really too thin. I suppose they might be good for brightening a dark sounding bass, but they don't really seem to have any balls.

Ya. That's pretty much how I feel. I also found there to be a strange tone difference between the top two and bottom two strings. Don't get me wrong, I loved the ease of playability...but the actual strings seem to be a bit rough around the edges in the manufacturing detail.
