Most Versite Strings
I am an electric player with a little upright chops. I've been looking for some strings that I can do everything with. I want to pluck for jazz gigs, slap for that rockabilly sound, but still be able to bow.
Is it possible to have such a string?
Downtuned Spiro Solos or gut strings (naked on G and D) are common choices.
But no string is perfect for all applications.
Also for jazz you would like a lower setup, for slapping a higher one.
I would consider Pirastro Evah pirazzi weich and Obligato strings. I also like helicore Hybrid and spirocore light gauge, but have settled on the Evah weich's.
Spiro weichs work just fine. You could go the downtuned solo route if you need to, but I don't find the weichs too heavy for slapping, on either of my basses.
At the end of the day, it's up to your bass what sort of tension you need ;)
A Spiro weich E/A plain gut D/G thing works well as "do-all" setup too, if you need things to be a little more old-school sounding. Just be patient and let the Spiros break in...and commit to some time in the 'shed to learn how to bow the guts.
