Velvet used to put out stuff about not mixing their strings with others so you'll get the benefits of equal tension, blah, blah, blah, but if you read posts on this site you'll see that every possible combination of stings has been tried by someone or another. If it works for you, do it.
I think that the specific combo you're talking about (Spiro/Velvet) is not uncommon. As far as the differing tensions, you'll just have to see how it feels for you and if it's a problem as far as you're concerned.
Different string tensions will affect the sound and feel of a bass. This can be true for whole sets and individual strings. But, it can be for the better or for the worse. Don't be afraid to experiment. |
