Multiple types of strings on one bass

- Hi

I was wondering if there are any opinions about putting different types of strings on the same bass? I just switched from thomastik spirocores to velvets and I really like the sound of the velvets on the D and G but I would like to have the thomastiks on the E and A.
Is is it safe to mix strings? I know that the velvets have extreme low tension so I am hesitant to try it. Would love a second opinion.

Thanks
Jared

Sure it's safe. Velvet used to put out stuff about not mixing their strings with others so you'll get the benefits of equal tension, blah, blah, blah, but if you read posts on this site you'll see that every possible combination of stings has been tried by someone or another. If it works for you, do it.

I think that the specific combo you're talking about (Spiro/Velvet) is not uncommon. As far as the differing tensions, you'll just have to see how it feels for you and if it's a problem as far as you're concerned.

Different string tensions will affect the sound and feel of a bass. This can be true for whole sets and individual strings. But, it can be for the better or for the worse. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Velvet Anima G and Helicore hybrid lights on the lower string.
And I think Ben Allison plays Spiro mittel E+A and Anima D+G.
