Mystery Strings

Hey guys, I posted this in the Basses section a couple days ago after buying my first DB, but no reply so I thought I'd try in here.

Can anyone identify these strings, and whether they will be worth replacing? I've spent some time searching for this particular string wrap colour combination with no luck. At least initially, I will be using my bass primarily bowed for the school orchestra (usually the only double bass in a 20-piece string section), but hopefully also occasional pizz for jazz and acoustic pop/rock playing.

Thanks!
J

Well they appear to be gut strings. I can't tell if they are wound with some type of metal or not, but they are clearly gut. Read some of the gut threads. They are a special thing that people either love or hate. If you're learning and using it primarily for orchestral use, I would think that yeah, they're worth replacing with a good orchestral string. There are a lot of good choices, do some searching.

Maybe someone else can ID the exact make of these strings, sorry I couldn't. I love the "name my strings game".

Looks like D'Addario Pro Arte to me (discontinued now).

Maybe basstef will chime in.
He knows them well.

No Francois...
Pro Arte have a blue silk with a red spiral at the tailpiece.

What they said - the tailpiece end silk colour is just like Innovation Honeys but the peg ends look to be from the D'Addario family....I'm stumped.

The disc attachments are different too...Innovations have a little metal roller and the Pro Artes are just a giant nylon loop.

I suppose it's possible that the attachments could be from elsewhere... I'm entertained by this little string mystery!

Is that gut or nylon? It looks like gut "yellowish" but it doesn't look like gut fiber. Thats more like nylon... Hmmm what could it be

The multi colored wraps do look like D'addario......or could they be some old Pyramid strings? Or some other European string winder, I imagine that there could of been any number of small shops in the past.

Be sure to hang on to them if you decide to change them out, they might sound good on another instrument.

There are no pictures of the actual strings (playing area) are they metal wrapped?

Yes, the wraps are definitely metal.

back to the original query, which we still haven't solved SHAME SHAME. I've never seen Nylon strings tie like that. Has anyone else? They still look like gut to me.

But, there can't be that many metal wrapped gut strings that we don't know about. We can't let this go unsolved.

Innovation 140H

And here are the peg ends. The colours are quite different from D'Addario's...

Yeah but when it comes to strings you're notoriously easy.

I posted your 'String Chant' on my site today: www.thebassspa.com --> Bass Strings-->

So, Innovation 140H... They look sweet. Damnit... Does anyone have the diameters of these?

They look nice, they feel good and they play great - the wrap is super smooth and the sound is thick but not blobby.

.065, .073, .098, .117 as installed on my old bass.

I put a more current version of the String Gauge Sticky on my website with the Innovations and some other more recent data. I can add to it at will there, whereas I'm denied access to the TB Sticky...

This is bad... For my economy. I got to try these!

Thanks, Jake. Is that the gauges from my Artones? I think so. I think they came in a lot of different diameters but here's my A and E too: 0.110 and 0.140 inches.

Great page Jake! Those Pro Arte look nice too... Too bad they're not available. Is the G-string from made any other material than the rest of the set? G - .089 and D -.084?
