Can anyone identify these strings, and whether they will be worth replacing? I've spent some time searching for this particular string wrap colour combination with no luck. At least initially, I will be using my bass primarily bowed for the school orchestra (usually the only double bass in a 20-piece string section), but hopefully also occasional pizz for jazz and acoustic pop/rock playing.
Thanks!
J

Read some of the gut threads. They are a special thing that people either love or hate. If you're learning and using it primarily for orchestral use, I would think that yeah, they're worth replacing with a good orchestral string. There are a lot of good choices, do some searching.
Maybe someone else can ID the exact make of these strings, sorry I couldn't. I love the "name my strings game".

Maybe basstef will chime in.
He knows them well.

Pro Arte have a blue silk with a red spiral at the tailpiece. |

The disc attachments are different too...Innovations have a little metal roller and the Pro Artes are just a giant nylon loop. |

| | | | The multi colored wraps do look like D'addario......or could they be some old Pyramid strings? Or some other European string winder, I imagine that there could of been any number of small shops in the past.
Be sure to hang on to them if you decide to change them out, they might sound good on another instrument. |

But, there can't be that many metal wrapped gut strings that we don't know about. We can't let this go unsolved.

I posted your 'String Chant' on my site today: www.thebassspa.com --> Bass Strings--> |

.065, .073, .098, .117 as installed on my old bass.
I put a more current version of the String Gauge Sticky on my website with the Innovations and some other more recent data. I can add to it at will there, whereas I'm denied access to the TB Sticky... |

Thanks, Jake. Is that the gauges from my Artones? I think so. I think they came in a lot of different diameters but here's my A and E too: 0.110 and 0.140 inches.
Great page Jake! Those Pro Arte look nice too... Too bad they're not available. Is the G-string from made any other material than the rest of the set? G - .089 and D -.084?
