The E and A are the tight round wound style silver winding. The D and G are nice and smooth to the touch. They have good definition up high and down low and are easy to play. They seem to have about the same tension as Innovation Super Silvers. I did notice that finger noise seemed a little more prominent compared to the Super Silvers. Maybe this will subside a little as they break in. I'll update after I've played them a bit more. |

My initial impression (caveat-this is immediately after installation), after the "Am I crazy?" is that they are pretty well made-the G and D are not quite as smooth as I remember from 30 years ago, but I think they're OK; the windings A and E are nice and tight-no opening up at the bridge. G and D are nice and punchy-A and E a bit less so. It's gonna be interesting to relearn how to play gut again. |

Cranking up the bridge cured most of that. The sound seems to be getting more complex the longer they're on though. While I still haven't found "the" EQ settings for them yet when amplified, they sound awesome playing unplugged. Overall I'm still very happy with the strings! |

My apartment stays between 68-75 degrees and 35-40% humidity. The wound strings are producing a nice fat tone both pizz and arco, and show zero sign of winding issues on the bridge area. The plain strings are not quite as smooth as I remember from my previous gut days but feel fine in general. Good punchy sound as well. I'm happy with these and intend to leave them on a while, although we know how that story goes. My community orchestra starts up in a few weeks-that should be interesting.

I no longer have them on my bass, though-I went all the way and got a set of Gamuts. The Clefs are very good strings at their price, and a good way to decide if gut is for you. They have been off and on a couple of times and have held up well; no unwinding.

They have broken in well and are very warm, round sounding, and generally pleasing to my ears. While they will not be for everybody, I highly recommend them as a way to get into gut strings without mortgaging your home to buy them! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
