I use Obligato G & D matched up with Spirocore or Weich E & A and the volume and tone is very even between them.

My Cleveland came with Spirocore mediums, right now I'm trying Obligatos. On this bass the Oblis are slightly less volume, as well as less growl...what KSB calls buzz saw. They have perhaps a little sweeter arco. I've had no problems that some have reported with them. But I'm told that once removed they don't do as well if reinstalled.

I have removed the Obligatos and restrung them and didn't have any problems with them. I also haven't found them to have a particularly short life span as has been reported. I've been using my current pair for 18 months and alot of gigging. On the negative side, I haven't had any success with the Obligato E strings, too sloppy sounding without center. I've tried a couple of them on different basses with the same result.

I went through a few sets of Obligatos. I would not call them a loud string. I would say Spiro Orch. are significantly louder, but I understand Obligatos can be very different from bass to bass.

Cool Obligatos

I had one set on and off 4 times between 3 different Basses and they still work fine after about 4 years. They are on my Son's 3/4 Shen 1000 model and he has used it for Jazz as well as Orchestra without any complaints. My Batchelder also has Obligatos on for about 4 years as well and still sound good. I guess it depends on the player, Bass, treatment you give them and what you are looking for in a string that makes them workable or not.

Update - After 18 months (the past 6 months of heavy daily use) the obligatos are done for.

Just a note:
I find the Obligatos do have a shorter lifespan than say, Spiros or Flexocore, but the flexibility and tone are well worth it.

I was for a few years regularly changing between orchestra and solo gauges, and did have a lot of trouble when reinstalling. The strings want to unwind a bit when reinstalled, and then you get this whooshy kind of sound going on, and they don't speak clearly. I was able to solve this problem by twisting the ball around a few turns before bringing the string into tension, thereby tightening up the wrap.

Works for me!
