Right now I have a Dominant D, and Spiro Mittels on the bottom. I generally dig the sound. My drummer suggested it would sound better if my "D" were more like the "G," but have read here that many think the Olive D doesn't match up well... Any thoughts or suggestions?
FYI this is on a Chinese carved and I play mostly standards and straight-ahead on this bass...
Thanks!

The Eudoxa D is little thinner, brighter and more defined, but still similar (flatwound, gut core). I'd also recommend the Evah Pirazzi D, a synthetic core but a similar sound. Darker than Dominant, cheaper than Eudoxa! |

| | | | I've had good luck with an olive G on top and the rest Evah Pirazzis.
I've since moved to Eudoxa G, D and A, and left the Evah Pirazzi E string. |

| | | | I find the Olive D to be a perfect match for the Olive G!
It starts out a bit thuddy, but after a week or two it opens up! I feel that it speaks very well all the way up into high TP!
I have Olive D & G and Evah E & A on both my basses (200 year old german bass and a Chezch Ease K-1) and this set sounds and feels absolutely amazing on both instruments.
But I would agree that both Eudoxa and Evah D's would fit well next to the olive G! |

| | | | Yes, Mittel. They last for a long time. They match the Oliv G very well. The Oliv D is a bit plunky and tubby for pizz. I don't think the Evah will last as long as Spiro. |

I get a nice clear, yet warm and big tone and they now work nicely under the bow. Tonewise, the Olive G is very close, but it has a bit more character on my bass. It sounds fatter, but almost brighter due to the clear pop at the front of the note. The tension, size and overall feel are nice, but I never liked skinny G's. The mitts are now two years old, the G about three months. Hopefully it will be this time next year before I consider changing anything.

Oliv G, Mittel E... only difference was I had a Weich A & E. It worked surprisingly well, but I think all Mittels with Oliv G would have to be a winner. Plus, the expense you save by having the Spiros on for the long run make the overall cost pretty reasonable, even with the Oliv on top.
That Oliv G is heavenly. |

1) Tuning stability. It tends to go a bit sharp on me and is always off during the first few minutes of a gig. This makes my intonation even worse.
2) Not crazy about it up in thumb position. It's good maybe to the Bb but doesn't have much above that. Then again, neither do I so it's no big deal.
