Original flat chrome G with a Bel canto EAD

Could I be crazy? I have had a set of Pirastro Original Flat Chromes on for a few months, and while I liked the singing quality of the G string, i had issues with the high tension of the E, A, and less so, the D strings including the heavier bow weight needed that came with it.

I had previously been playing a set of Thomastik-Infeld Bel Cantos, and had decided I wanted to try someting new when I bought the Flat Chromes on the recommendation of an erstwhile teacher of mine.

I had had enough of the flat chromes and decided to change back to bel cantos, but I Stopped at the G string and tested the results. I'm intrigued at the moment, but I guess we will see in the coming days if I like it or not.

I just figured I'd fill you guys in, as I had never thought of mixing strings before I started to hang with you lot!

well, I've been playing on them for a few days, and I've been liking the result. even just playing scales and arpeggios has been more rewarding. I'm going to try and get some audio or a video up so that you guys aren't just sitting looking at a blank screen and taking my word for it

What are you going to do with your Flat chrome DAE? I have Flat chrome steels and wish I got originals.

My original post has been lost to the ether (just as well, I think I was the only one who posted on it), but I finally made the video with the samples (pizz and arco). My apologies to all pizz players, I'm a generally classical guy, but I figured I should at least attempt.

I know it's not my best playing, but it was more to try and get a sense of how they blended together. I think they sound alright in terms of blend, and I know they feel alright, despite what I thought would be a big change in tension.

I'm holding onto them at the moment, mostly because I ended up paying a lot of cash for them. whereabouts are you at? if you're around we might be able to arrange some sort of loan or something, to see if you like them.

I'm actually thinking of going the complete other way now, in terms of sound. I'm thinking of going a Eudoxa or some other sort of gut on top, just to see what it's like. I'm ending up doing a lot more Pizz on the project I'm currently in, and I'm not a big fan of the sound I have, especially on the G. very hollow.

Arco sounds ok to me. Not crazy about the pizz.

Have you tried the Belcanto G yet?

I sure have. I ran a full set of bel canto's for a year (the strings I'm using now, in fact, sans G). I found that the G, while having the singing quality I liked, it was a bit weak in terms of volume when compared to the D.

i think some of the difference may be the respective ages of the string. The OFC (used as a whole set) only had a few months of daily practice on them, whereas the bel canto's had a bit more than a year. Perhaps I should spring for some new bel cantos?
