Original Flex. G - Break-in Time

Recently I've switched from Permanents to Original Flexocors on my G, D, and A. I have been very satisfied with how the D and A have been performing, but, because of a month long backorder ordeal, I just received the G today.

I put the G on a couple of hours ago and I've been playing on it, in order to break it in, ever since. When I strung up the D and A, they had a relatively short break in time and had the characteristic lush, dark sound that Originals usually have almost immediately. The G, however, sounds very tinny and, on the occasion, twangs. Is this characteristic of a new Original Flex G?

I know the original Flex are not the same as the Flex'92 medium set I recently bought, but my G was also disapointing at first. It just didn't fit wth the rest of the set, and while I wouldn't call the '92 G "tiny" it was not what I was expecting.

The good news is that it did break in, and now matches nicely with the rest of the set. It is nice and full and rich in tone, but it did take a long time to get there. I have forgotten exactly how long, but I would say at least a month.

You might try getting one of those tone filters that come with pirastro strings sometimes. They're supposed to help take some of the edge out of the G.

They come only with the steel G's, by the way, but I'm not sure if they still provide them in each pouch as they used to do.

I've thought about getting some little O-rings and seeing if they can do the job, since I have yet to receive one. Maybe these weekend I'll make a run to the hardware store and tell yall how it goes.

Ah, I just looked in the G pouch and, what do you know, there's the rubber ring. It did take some of the edge out of the sound and, inadvertently, it helped eliminate the buzz on the fingerboards G octave.

After a grueling four hours of play tonight, the G is starting to find it's place. We have Mozart's 35th to thank for that. Thanks to Joey and Francois as well.
