its cool- the tone of that post was a little strong -andI have seen some gnarly posting take place so ia m a little over cuatious I suppose. - afterall we are all just here offering up whatever we all know. to be clear- tuning any of the strings down loosens the tension and prressure of the bridge against the body - therefoe alowing the post to move a little easier..at least in my experience

OK I suppose you can read that as being all the strings. But actually i discovered the effect one string at a time. Particularly the E string was most remarkable change. And no, I don't tune down every night or even every other night. But when the strings sound a bit too dark, the procedure seems to bring them back to life.

Anyway ... doesn't everybody these days use a self-tapper through the top to keep the soundpost in place?

I didnīt mean to be unfriendly! This again proves the danger of treating an online forum in the same way as a face-to-face conversation.
If you could see me in-person when I replied, you would know that I only meant to clearly say that it was not my intention to state that downtuning the strings would be a way of keeping the soundpost in place in my earlier post. I felt I need to make this clear again because I was the first to mention the soundpost in this thread at all.
Anyway, I guess if I could see you in-person when you replied I wouldnīt think I have to reply in the way I did, so please accept my apologies if I sounded rude.

For the silent reader of this thread - resting the strings every few months is something that you should try before buying new strings because they sound dead (as is wiping them with alcohol), but if you like your strings the way they sound now, there is no need to rest them, is there?

I was just saying that I didn't see where anybody said that loosening the strings would help to keep the soundpost in place. I agree with you that that would make no sense at all.
