Sorry for such a newbie question, but I currently have a 3/4 DB that is in need of a new set of strings.

Do I specifically need to get a 3/4 set of strings or can I use a 4/4 set of strings to a good effect?

You can use both.
In fact, very few DB strings are available in the true 4/4 lenght.
With a true 4/4 string, you'll just get a bit less tension on a 3/4 scale.

Pirastro's standard lenght is in fact 7/8. (between 3/4 and 4/4)

Unless otherwise specified, Thomastik DB strings are 4/4.
The Dominants come in 3/4 only.
For the other models, each size has a unique number.

Helicores are designed for 3/4 size scale.
