SF/ Mittel combos Recently took off the EP's and went back to the Superflex G/ Mittel D,A,E combo I have been happy with in the past. In short I enjoyed the punch, but missed the bowability.
After a couple days and gigs I thought I'd try adding the SF D and A and leave the Spiro Mit E on (so now SF G,D,A and Mit E) to keep that low end growl clarity thing that only Spiro Mits or Stark E's can do. This turns out to be a winning combo for me right now and was great for a recent club show where I had to play at Jazz & Pop at some louder amplified levels and then turn around into some featured arco parts on ballads etc.
Some might say why not SF G&D and Mitt A & E? For me I think the SF D is too fat next to a Mitt A. It's a thicker D than the Mitt D and a Mitt A seems a bit whimpy next to it. The SF A, however works very well next to a Mit E I'm discovering and this well broken in E is bowing well enough. Great set up for Jazz gigs thru my Focus and Wizzy's giving warm, focused amplified piz tone. Really versatile, I kept the same set up for a orchestral gig and the bass seemed to blend beautifully in the section.
