I got to hear David Friesen play my bass with Animas on it, in an group setting, last night. He commented on how good my bass sounded with the Animas (which is saying something considering how loyal he is to Tomastik).
Interesting thread for me as I've just switched to Animas and really like them - but the second quote above, is to me an example of a phenomenon I've experienced many times.

So - when I go to Jazz Summerschool, there are several great bass players who can get a wonderful sound out of whatever they pick up from their students - as Chris says, they would never blame their tools, before their hands and ear!!

Animas, bowing, &etc., &etc., usw.

So I played a gig earlier this week on a borrowed bass strung with Animas, and my initially skeptical opinion of them continues to improve. They're excellent jazz strings, for reasons previously discussed: projection, tone, etc., etc. I was playing with a pretty loud group, and I did have to turn up a few times during the gig to hear myself, which probably has more to do with me missing the midrange of my usual setup than lack of volume.

I had a bit of warm-up time to run scales and excerpts and I'd say they're definitely good enough for 'jazz arco,' and probably good enough for 'arco arco,' though it would take some getting used to. I don't find that they bow as naturally as, say, Helicores. If you have to have the sound, though, you could learn to work with it.

If I had a second bass that I only used for straight-ahead jazz & sim., this is probably what I'd use. I have a personal moratorium on gear lust right now, though, so I'm sticking to what I know ...
