3) Spiro weichs. John Goldsby left a set on my office bass this summer, and I actually really liked them. They lack the power of the mittels (especially on the G string), but they sound really good, and a good player can really get around on them and make them sing. |
The line about the Stark is CLASSIC!
I never was a string aholic until I started coming around here a year or so ago. I admit I've been real tempted to go off in other directions mainly because i hear almost too much info about various strings.
Lately I've talked to a few friends and mentors who really don't come here too often. These are players who are REAL GOOD! Turns out they all use Spiro Weichs...go figure, For some reason, that's what I've been using for a long time. I just returned some "gut like" strings to Quinns and ordered another set of..yep, Spiro Weichs.
Whatever issues I have with strings, (including Spiros), I've got many more issues with my technique. I don't think the strings make much of a difference in terms where I want it to be as a player.
Furthermore, the sound I hear in my head is that stringy overtone laden, growly Spiro sound. I have to admit, I just like em!
Guess I'll just keep shedding as hard as I can all the time. For me, that is where the real sound comes from!
