Spiro Weich Quality Issues

Has anyone noticed any quality issues with Spiro Weichs lately? With the last set I bought, the A and E string sounded dead right when I put them on. They were so bad I had to put the old set back on.

The set I purchased before this had similar problems. The strings seem uneven, unclear and dead.

Yea. Leave them on for a couple days and they usually turn out fine. If not send them back for fresh ones.

Its very odd if they start out dead though. If they start out sounding your bowing hollow metal, then thats more like it.

Never had string brighten up on the bass, only deaden.

Where did you get them? Were they newish or have they been sitting around for a long time?

I was given a spiro mittel E once that was never used, but had been sitting around for many years. It wasnt as bright as I was expecting.

Hey Phil, how's it going? I actually exchanged a set already, this is the second one that has the same problem.

Toad, thanks for the advice, I'll try that.

Jazzman, that has been my experience too. Usually my Spiro's sound super bright when first installed. They are brand new, just purchased...

He died last year, in case you didn't know.

FWIW, I had a dead new Spiro E last year.
It sounded like a Belcanto E....
I got a replacement from Connelly, but that's strange...

Yes, same thing. Dead E string. Had to put old mittel and it's O.K. The mittel will last almost forever and I like the higher tension on the E string anyway.

Gents - I'm actually thinking of going back to LaBellas. Or, maybe trying a heavier gauge Spiro. Any thoughts?

Depends on the bass but I really prefer Mittels to Weichs.

Agreed. I have a Shen SB 100 in my office with spiro mitts (and a stark E, I must admit) on it right now, and it's *killing*. The beautiful thing about the mittel gauge is that you can find the tension sweet spot pretty easily: on the lowish side works if you like that vibe, medium height gives you some more pop on the front of the note, and you can also jack them up for a direct punch in the face/gut Drew Gress type thing (my favorite at the moment).

Me too. Stark E Mittel A/D/G is pretty dang cool on the right bass.

I love those strings! I have only had a couple of basses that could handle the tension, but they have so much presence. Great sounding strings!

Yeah, my only concern is how they match up with my low B Red.

Well, I'm not unhappy with the Spiros. Actually I think they are great. And they sound killing on my Kay. I'm kind of in an experimenting mood because I just got a Barbera transducer. It's a pretty amazing device, but I'd like to see how it responds to a dryer sounding string.

Let us know how arco sounds with that pickup, because the arco sample that barbera provides on their site sounds bloody awful.
