Spirocore Breaking at the Bridge

In the past six months I've broken two spirocore mittels off of my new NS Cleveland, first the D and then recently the A. Is possibly caused by a correctable problem or not. Info: I play without an amp, strings are high, and I pull pretty hard so its absolutely possible that thats the problem-each time I broke one I was at a large concert where I was most likely unconciously straining to be heard. If so I can live with it because I love the sound I'm getting.

Peace,
Ben

Sounds like your string slots in your bridge are a bit tight. You can file them a bit wider with a needle file.(but don't overdo it!) then rub some graphite (Pencil lead) in the slots.

Wow. I'm an animal and I've never broken a spirocore.

Have a luthier check your bass for points where the string could be pinched off. Any point the string touches something wood or metal can be a potential stress point. If there can be relief in any of those spots have that taken care of. In addition be sure it is set up for the kind of power playing you are doing.

The bass can only get so loud on it's own. Pulling so hard you break a Spirocore is probably pulling past the ability of the bass to put out the volume you are looking for. If it is properly set up and functioning to it's capacity than you must examine physical factors as well.

I think volume and power come from using large muscle groups efficiently. Have your teacher explore your technique with you to be sure you are pulling all the sound you can as efficiently as possible.

There are many posts around here about playing without an amp. Most deal with where you put the bass. Find walls and corners to get near. Get up high. Lots more stuff than I want cover. Do searches on "no amp" and stuff like that.

Lastly if you have a well set up Cleveland, are playing efficiently, are placing your bass for optimum acoustic volume and still can break spiro reds You are a candidate for Spiro Starks. The most brutal and loud string I ever put on my Cleveland.

I can't play any of them but the E anymore. My hands can't take it. If you can hang with them and not injure yourself they are killer.

I can't.
