Steel strings

Morning all,

I know we've been going round and round about the virtues/hates/likes/dislikes of gut strings. That's what I'm playing now (along with Animas). I've been doing my part with UncleToad and others to learn and share what I know about the guts or simulated guts.

Just out of complete curiosity, when did steel strings become available?

Thanks,

I've given this thread about a week to mature and maybe it's going to turn into manure. But, I DO know that there's a couple of other members who really would like to know some info as to when steels came into existence. These folks have sent me PMs to this effect.

Francois?

Go to this thread and scroll for info on this subject. It seems that steel bass strings first appeared in the mid 50's.

Thanks Bobby, for the link to the thread. I wasn't trying to raise an argument, though some may have thought so. Whatever I'm into, I like to go back and try to understand the history of where it came from, that's all I was interested in.

Thanks again Bobby for the Artone A. It is pretty rough, but I'm going to try and salvage it at some point.

I guess I could ask George and John Shuffler, due to both playing bass for The Stanley Brothers, way back when.

That's really interesting. Thomastic made the first steel string? What was it?

Interesting. I'd suspect it was a solid core string, but anyone's guess is as good as mine.

I think the first steel strings where Thomastik Precision.
The super flexibles where a later development, but I think still before world war 2.
