String options for NS Cleveland ply

I'm currently using spirocore orchestra G, D, A and dominant E on my Cleveland ply. I'm pleased with the D, A and E but the G twang in the middle register (E, F, etc.) drives me nuts. Does anyone have experience with other type strings for this instrument? I've tried a dominant G and that wasn't much better. Has anyone used the super flexibles on this instrument?

My favorite G strings on the Cleveland Ply so far.
  • Gamut Gut Heavy G
  • Gamut Gut Med G
  • Oliv G
  • Anima G
  • Dominant G
  • Belcanto G
  • Flexocor G
Haven't put a super flex on there. I prefer gut, gut core, or hybrid strings on the G. The all steel G strings get weak as you go up. The last two arco strings are the only exception so far.

If you don't feel comfortable with plain Gut (I understand if you don't) the Oliv is my favorite choice.

I've just gone from spiro Mittels to spiro Weichs (orchestra to light) on my Cleveland. I've lost some volume, but the Weichs sound warmer and less 'banjo-ey', as well as being easier to bow.

The weich G is very warm on my Cleveland.

Interestingly, there is not much difference in tension on my bass between Weich and Mittel.

I'm also convinced that Ray Brown used these strings later on in his career- when I play along to 'Soular Energy' it sounds very similar!

I use a Pirastro Eudoxa E and A with Aquila (medium gauge) D and G on my New Standard. I do a lot of slap and these work great.

I am about to try the Aquila metal wrapped Nylgut strings. I haven't found a synthetic string that I like as much as gut but I decided to give them a shot.
