I do agree with the Flexocor suggestion. It's a very popular orchestral string for good reason.

Perhaps start with the E and see what you think.

If you do use a Flexocor E, avoid the regular tension because I've heard it flat out sucks - the rest of the set is fine, although the A can be a tad more beefy. Go for the Flexocor Stark E as a replacement instead.

I feel that way too but not everyone does. Many use the regular Flexocor E strings and are happy with them.

My preference would be the Stark Flex E, although the Permanent is an excellent string as well.

Given the Belcanto being closer to Weich than Mittel I thought the Regular gage would work best.
Could be, I've yet to put my hands on a full set of Belcantos. Put a G on for a few minutes in the shop and liked it.

The G is a fantastic string. E, not so much.

Full set has sounded great on lots of basses I've played though.

There has been plenty of experimenting, with both my luthier and I trying to figure it out. Nothing has been found that indicates any issue other than the tension of the string.

I was able to exchange the string for a Original Flexocor. I wasnt sure if Flexocor or Original Flexocor was the one I wanted, but I remember talking to a bassist friend of mine that said the "old flexocors" were better. Was this the one I wanted for orchestral playing?

I may be wrong here, but I think the regular Flexocors are actually the "old" style, while the "Original Flexocors" are actually a newer formulation.

Something is amiss more than just the tension of the E-string. If you are content with having your choice of E string limited by this issue then don't worry about it. I'd want to figure it out.

It's probably easier to figure out what's wrong with your bass that to figure out Pirastro's naming convention. Many have tried.
