String tension question.

It would seem that the string tension of any particular string would increase on a bass with a greater string scale (mensure), correct or incorrect?

I was looking at a website where the tension of various strings is given, but without any mention of the scale. What is that measurement based on?

Bobby,
Here are links to two sites that explain and calculate string tension.

For any given string the tension increases with the scale length and also with the total string length.

If you want to tighten up a floppy E string, wind it onto the G tuner for a little more tension or onto the A tuner for a lot more.

The afterlength is another way to add or subtract tension for the playing part of the string. ie raising up the tailpiece will shorten the strings and loosen them, and vice versa.

Thanks folks, this is certainly what my experience has shown me. But I still get confused, and please explain where this logic is wrong -- Wouldn't a string be stretched more to achieve the same pitch at a shorter length? Or maybe equal out since the greater length is also stretching it?
