strings that are good for arco with high tension

hi,
i was wondering if anyone had any advice for someone without a lot of money to experiment with in regards to high tension strings that work well for both arco/pizz. i have used nothing but spiro's with my action at somewhere between a inch and an inch and a half. the best pizz sound i got was with the spiro starks, but my classical teacher just about killed me for using them, and i must admit my arco sound was reminiscent of a band saw. i'm using the middle gauge spiros now and was thinking of trying for the first time a new string set to achieve a darker pizz sound with less sustain and a cleaner arco sound. i use the bow a lot and can't help but feel like i would get a cleaner sound with other strings. I was thinking of either trying the velvet animas, or jargar heavies. any suggestions?
my bass definitely likes higher tension, does this automatically discount the velvets? i also need full access to the instrument, including playing on the A and E strings in thumb positions. are there any wound gut strings that play clearly on the A and E strings in thumb positions? do any jazz users have experience with the jargars?
I don't mind changes in my setup and technique (even resulting in volume loss) to find a string that would play as clearly as the spiros up top, that has a darker tone and less sustain.
thanks,
chris

"with my action at somewhere between a inch and an inch and a half."

Anybody else find this noteworthy?

I figured it was a typo.

No kidding. I didn't see his write-in vote in the String Height Poll!

string height

yeah, its kinda of high, but for some reason my bass loves it. and since i've been playing with it like this for the last five years, its become natural.

Don't expect the same pizz clarity with Jargars than with Spiros.
They are at the opposite in the string spectrum.

Ever tried the Superflexibles?
To me they feel a tad tighter than Mittels, and have a somewhat darker tone.
They're supposed to be more arco-friendly too.
