Strings made to order? (thomastik)

I was wondering if anyone has had strings made to order.

I had a special interest in Thomastik (Hello ThomastikMike!!) but if anyone has had experience with other brands, I would love to hear about it.

It seems that there could be a market in our forum for spiro stark extended Es, for example.

Well, custom strings are always possible, but they are almost always at a premium and may have a minimum order. There are also some details that have to be considered, especially for the ones that don't fit into the template of currently produced strings.

So, you want a slightly larger or smaller gauge of a string that already exists -- not usually a problem. You want to create your own formula for bass tone awesomeness (i.e. can you make me a 154cm Super-Domi-Spiro string wrapped with unicorn hair and silked in lime green???)...that's probably not possible.

I checked into the Stark Spiro E extension for you guys. Here is the response I received from R&D:

"It would be possible to make a S44St, but the tension would be too high. The S44 (medium) is about the tension of the Spirocore stark strings. So it is not recommended to apply even more tension than that to any instrument."

I believe he really means "use at your own risk". Any thoughts?

My only thought is that I can't wait for the strings wrapped with unicorn hair and silked in lime green to become available in the states.

Hey Mike,

nice to see a rep up here. I am actually endorsed by Thomastik strings- love em and have been a dedicated user for quite some time. I do however, drive myself insane switching between Weichs and orchestras..what I would really love is orchestras or even better yet - superflex's at a lighter tension... why is there only one tension for the supers?? can't they make them a little less stark?? they are currently higher tension then the orchestra mittels!!!
thoughts ?
A

I guessed it would be that way. Do you have any precedents to give us a vague idea?

Thanks for the enquiry, I really appreciate it.

Well I can tell you that I would be willing to use such a string at my own risk.

We need to see whether there are enough people to go along with me in the purchase. (I might have to start a new thread to attract attention)
Anybody ???
