So far I didn't try too many strings...
- Pirastro Flexocors (I know there is different types, but mine are just Flexocor bass) - love the feel (the way they wrap around my fingers), but they don't have much mwah in them.
- TI Spirocores Med.orch - a bit harder on the hands, but plenty of mwah. They were much harder to control than the Flexocors.
I'd like a string that has Spiro mwah to play with + not so stiff as Spirocores. I don't mind thick strings just don't care very much for stiffness.
Now considering other options like Oblis or Animas.
Should I go for Oblis or Animas? Is there some MWAH for me there or just thud-thud? Any other strings I should consider?
Danko

In my experience, obligatos would be next down the list; less mwah, more fundamental. Animas would be another quantum leap in the opposite direction, less mwah, much more fundamental and volume.
I think I've used up my "Mwah" quota. |

I think I've used up my "Mwah" quota. | Thanks Marcus. I'm still not quite sure if I'm ready for Animas. So, I guess it's down the Obligated road for me now. And the price is much more acceptable.
How are obligatos volume-wise?
I'll have some street gigs in the near future and I guess my bass will be the only monitor (maybe even a speaker) for me. So in THAT light, maybe Animas because they are louder?
DOH!
How thick are Animas? Are they stiff as Spiros?

Animas are quite thick, especially the D & G strings. They don't feel as stiff as Spiros on my bass. Spiros feel like electric bass strings to me in comparison. The Animas are very low tension and comfortable to me. Some people have issues with the windings, but they feel great to me. They are MUCH louder than either Spiros or Obligatos in my experience.
Bear in mind that every bass is different. |

| | | | if you want mwah (did i even spell that right?) and low tension, check out the corelli mediums. they're soft and sound good. check my sound samples on the sampler page under the name steve swanson. those are corelli mediums with just a ribbon mic 3-4 feet in front of the bass about dead center, not near the f holes.. |

Too much mid-range singing in them Corelis. I want it more raw. But thanks Steve, you've been much of a help.

gomez | Ya, I associate the term with electric fretless, and Jaco
is the platonic ideal of that sound

to get vibrating, and with some basses lighter tension strings
bring out that vibration/resonance more. My bass seems to
be one of those. I put Corelli mediums on cuz thats what she
wanted me to do... I whined and complained that the strings
were too 'whimpy' and thin... but I AM paying her to teach
me so what the hell I left them on a while.
Now after a few weeks... OMG ... they are just beautiful.
They definitely are an ARCO oriented string, I still like
Dominants for pizz, but right now I'm all about bowing, and
these strings just let the bass SING, its great.
