Is there a reason not to use Solo Tuning?
Assuming that you're not doing any section playing, and you don't mind the learning curve, is there any downside to solo tuning? It seems that the only difference (besides the obvious one) is that they are slightly louder and cut through the orchestra/band better.
Not having the low notes notated is why. You are a part of a whole and chose bass. It may not necessarily be better for the orchestra to cut more. The orchestra sound is only as good as the worst sounding instrument.

I meant to say outside of orchestral playing.

The bass/strings can sound different. Sometimes they do cut a little more/seem louder, but that often has a little more to do with how you are playing and the way the music is written in my opinion.
Outside of the orchestra, it's totally your call what you do. If you do plan on playing a "normally" tuned bass or in an orchestra again, then the relearning curve could be a pain.
Give it a shot and see what you think. It might be just what the doctor ordered.
