thick wound steel wrapped in rubber?

So I was playing in a few folk festivals in Europe this summer and in one in Italy I played a guys bass (I think he was from Latvia?) and the strings looked like a really thick wound steel with a rubber coating on them. I've never seen strings like that, any idea what they were? Pretty weird playing them, but it sounded great.

Were they black or whitish?
Black could be LaBella 7710 series.
Whitish could be Eurosonic (Presto in the EU)

Hope this helps.

The rubbery coating was clear. I could see the steel string underneath. The string was one of the thickest wound strings I have ever seen. If you actually played the steel string without the rubber coating your fingers would be shredded in seconds.

Presto

Interesting. I haven't heard much about these. Are they available in the US? How much? Anyone else try them?
