Thickness of Strings

What is the difference between different thickness of stings? Such as Pirastro's Flexocor thin, medium and think. Does it mean the strings are softer if thinner?

Well, generally thicker strings are going to have more tension. They may have more volume and different sound qualities. Also, I've heard that the Stark Spirocore has less growl or Mwah than the Mittel or Weich gauge. Sometimes though, different kinds of strings that are similar in gauge will have a different feel tension wise. I have found that Pirastro Original Flexocors are easier to play (less tension) than Stark Regular Flexocors even though they are similar in gauge.

The construction of the string is different so with the same guage you can have different tensions.
And vice-versa.
