Tuner too small for string???

I just built a whamola. Its a one string, electric upright bass that is played either by fretting or with a lever. I used bass guitar tuning machines because they are much more affordable for a project like this. The double bass string I used snapped at the tuner. Could the tuners be too small and cause the string to much stress and snap?

It could be - it could also be that the smaller diameter of the string post puts too much of a bend in the string. You might try countersinking the string hole in the post so that it has a more gentle entry/exit.

Good luck!
