Good to know. I have a feeling my winding issues are a result of my particular application however: transporting the bass in and out of warm/cold environments and the dry winter air after a very humid summer. The Gamuts are definitely on my radar since it appears that the company has no problem rewinding their strings. I need longevity at a price that does not eat up my earnings!

Time to make an update. The wound Dlugolecki A and E are still on my bass! The windings are separated in two places and I can see gut beneath. I had planned on replacing them with the Garbo A and E I purchased some time ago. However the guts sound fantastic and are completely stable from a tuning perspective. And the winding separation is so minimal that is really doesn't effect my playing. So I'm going to ride the train while longer. I fully suspect that the stability problems will return this winter. My plan is to switch to the Garbo A and E then. The last time I went two seasons with guts it was snap, crackle, pop in the middle of the night. I have concluded that the wound gut A and E strings are fantastic so long as you don't expect them to perform well in dry winter conditions. However if I enjoy the Garbo, I may not return to the wound guts on the bottom...

On both strings the separation begins at 1" from the nut and continues to about 4" from the nut. The separation is not very noticeable for most of that span with exception to one spot on the A where the separations are about 1/16" in distance from one another. On an interesting note, I was able to "rewind" the E by merely loosening the string, twisting it clockwise and then retuning. This technique didn't work for the A however.

And to clarify, the separation measurements are from the nut to above the fingerboard and not from the nut to the pegbox.
