Velvet Blue Sound Clips (use headphones)

Here are some clips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oHkfcA1Vk4&safe=active ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA0KgEK9IGU&safe=active ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5py7OOV177M&safe=active) of my Lemur Music Laguna bass strung with Velvet Blues. I have a Wilson K-1 going straight into a Carvin BX 500 (bass and low mid set flat, hi mid and treble all the way down) through a Berg EX 112 FWIW.

I have used many strings over the years (as I know most all you have too) and until I tried these I had been using Kolstein Heritage strings for about 2 years. They are really nice strings, however these Velvet Blues really have a clearer articulation and a much more pronounced solid punch to them....fantastic tension too!

Anyway, the clips are for you to get an idea of how they sound in case you are contemplating getting some.

BTW, I just got the Laguna Bass from Lemur this week and am REALLY impressed with it!

Thank you for posting that. It was helpful for me. I was considering those but they sound a tad dark for my taste.

Nice playing too :).

They are actually quite bright sounding. As I said, I am using an EX cab with no tweeter, and the hi mid and treble are all the completely off. I prefer a dark sound, but with the amp set flat, the brightness of the strings would surely come through more. FWIW.

completely off ...not "all the completely off" :) It's early here!

Much appreciated.
They look very flexible as well.
I like the low end, and quite curious now how they would sound without EQ.
If you have time to do an acoustic clip, without an amp, that would be the icing on the cake.

Thanks for the clips. If you like that dark a tone, have you considered Bel Cantos?

Here is a clip of the strings unamplified: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqOjIPWD-lQ

Thanks for this.
I think my bass might like them :)

Here is a short clip how my bass sounds with the V. Blue which I bought recently from a Tbasser in like new condition.
I like them very much, they are pleasently bright with warm mids & growl, and nice low end. I believe that the brightness will come down with time.
Surprisingly, they sound amazing when they are amplified.

Are the blues more similar to animas or garbos? I'm looking for an older sound and I play pizz and slap, currently playing animas.

What d'ya think?

panos 04-21-2013 12:24 PM

I've only played animas in the past. I think that the Blues have their own character, but if I had to answer to the way you pose the question, I could tell that blue is more similar to animas considering that Garbos are trying to be more like gut (sound characteristics-low tension, etc..).
You could search for garbo lights, just an idea...

Yes indeed, somewhat anyway. They don't go totally dark.

... and indeed they have their own character, but - from listening to Anima and Garbo clips, I think maybe they're less distinctive than either of those, just a pretty decent all around string albeit not universally popular for arco. There are more obvious choices for a synthetic gut slap string.
