You can bow any string. Your level of success depends on about a million things. What kind of whackers are we talking about?

Someone is on the classifieds right now selling various full sets of strings for like 15 bucks a set. Do yourself a favor and just get a set of those.

I've tried a little bit of Arco on G and D wackers, just as an experiment so I know what I'm in for if I break a plain gut on a road trip, say.
You can get long tones if you've roughed up the bowing area with some 220 grit, and apply some rosin directly to the string, yada yada....
They don't sound half bad if your needs are really basic - with some work, probably close to plain gut in sound. Definitely better than Prestos or similar...but not real arco strings.
Again, this is the D/G strings - bowing the E/A would be a real headache, with extremely limited results.

What do you mean by Prestos? Presto Nylonwound, Presto Balance (they bow like butter!), Presto Jazzicato? Or something else?
The polish made Presto double bass strings are not bad. The nylonwound strings may nedd some rosin on the strings probably to be roughed up in the bowing area too, but there is no difference to what you described. I'm sure any polish made Presto double bass string is better than any whacker.

Presto nylonwound aka Eurosonic, which is what most are referring to when the subject is brought up. Apologies for the vagueness...
... and yes, they are quite a bit different. Horrible screechy sound, with almost no low end. Essentially the polar opposite of their pizz sound, and nothing like bowing on guts, wackers, etc.
